Pronghorn Fencing

In recent years the San Rafael pronghorn herd has expanded into the southern portion of the San Rafael Valley. Pronghorn have learned to traverse fences by crawling underneath them, but if the bottom wire is barbed wire or is too low, movements are impeded. A few pronghorn learn to jump fences; however, the vast majority are reluctant.

Some portions of the fencing on the SRSNA are not pronghorn friendly or in need of repair.  The Arizona Antelope Foundation has offered to fund, replace and repair parts of the SRSNA fencing.

In terms of background, the AAF relies on volunteers to modify barbed wire fencing in key pronghorn habitat throughout Arizona to wildlife-friendly fencing by removing the bottom wire and replacing with a smooth wire at least 16" from the ground. This restores wildlife mobility as it essentially removes the barrier, providing an area where the pronghorn are able to duck under the fence.
